A customer on my route with whom I have had some lively debates was his number 1 complaint is that "the Witnesses have so many rules". Last month I agreed with on this issue. He asked why the change, I told him that I have been doing some soul searching. I said : That the WT society and the local congregation should a talk lets say on "Our attitude with people of the World", share what the scriptures says and I feel those in the congregation should decide for themselves had to apply it. Lets face it, some things are "cut and dry", with no wiggle room. But my many things are to be left up to our conscience to decide.
For example our kids in school. We have to tell them:" Do not salute the flag, do not participate in any parties (most), do not join any sports teams, no student counsel, etc".
Then he asked the Big Question: Why are YOU still in? I paused and said: "Because I have a teenage child at home, I have to instill some core principles in his life so hopefully he does not go crazy in his adult years like child 1 did". (We are nowhere as hardcore with this one as we were with the first child). My customer agreed that to instill good principles in children, regardless of which religion, was the moral thing to do!

calling all elders - what goes on at the week long elders school?
by not bitter inmy dad is currently attending a week long elders school.
dad is in his 70's and not in great health at the moment so this is adding to my anger that he is having to leave the house at 7am and doesn't return until 6pm and then has to lock himself away to study further in preparation for the next day.. he has also been told he is not to discuss anything about the school with other elders until they have all attended.
what are they learning about that isnt' already out there for all to read anyway.. they can't be learning more bible stuff as the bible is there to be read by the general public so i can only assume that its all top secret stuff that the rest of the congregation can't know about.

if your an elder right now and your on this board your a coward. So what if you have family members that are JWs you need to practice what you preached. Inform the congregation your an apostate,
Then what Sarahsmile? We have to live with our families, not you!

I remember at one school we were going over the Watchtower and Bible Study Conductor role. One brother said: "I like to do extra research and tell the friends about". Our instructor said: "So you are telling me that the Governing Body didn't do a good enough job on the article". There was complete silence. Then the instructor followed up by saying: " Just ask the questions, you are not a player, you are the Conductor".

They go over your responsibilities as an Elder. You go through points in the Elder Manuel and OD book. Then they go over each Elder's position like the COBE, Secretary, Service Overseer and the rest so that if something should happen at these positions, another brother would be able to take over with little interuption. They will cover a day of "Proper Sheperding of the Flock", using various scenarios and scenes. Then a day on how to Judge, Handle, and deal with Judicial cases. Support the Traveling represenatives, never speak of them in negative terms. There is alot to cover it can be endless. In the end, you walk away feeling "not worthy", realizing, you got alot to work on.

Former Long Time Elder - Judicial Committees
by James Jackson inwhen i first was appointed as an elder, i could not wait to be on a judicial committee.
it semed like most hearings invovled middle age men and women cheating on their mates because either they had married early or felt that were being neglected by their mate.
most times i felt i need to take a long hot shower after a hearing.. the toughest part was seeing these sweet young children grow up in "the truth", and now you are about to judge their future based on their repentance.

Sarahsmiles: I would like to know if you are an elder at this time? Did your son confess his sins?
I am not an Elder at this time, though served over 20 years. My Son did confess, but was not going to leave "the worldly girl."He has since moved elsewhere, got a job and has returned going to meetings.

Former COs that Become Inactive
by Bob_NC insome long years ago a circuit overseer told me that the area he was from had several former cos that had "left the road" as they call it and were just sitting on their laurels.
he said that they don't pioneer and some were irregular publishers.
a different co made a remark to the effect of "you think that servants or pioneers live a restricted life, cos are under the supervision of the service dept.

What about John Graeff? He left Alabama for Texas, then disapeared.
